Flow Posing Guides for Newborn Photographers

Curled newborn baby wrapped in white lifestyle newborn photography

You know that feeling mid-session when the baby has just woken up, mum is about to feed, dad is looking at you expectantly and your mind goes completely blank? That is exactly what these guides are for.

I have been photographing newborns and babies for 6 years. I have shot hundreds of sessions. I still open my Flow Posing Guide before every single one.

Not because I have forgotten what to do. Because having a clear sequence in front of me means my mind stays where it should be — on the baby, on the parents, and on building a gallery they will love.

What the Guides Contain

Each guide contains 81 poses laid out as a visual grid. Every pose shows a photograph, a lighting note and a camera angle. Nothing complicated. Everything you need at a glance.

The poses flow naturally from one to the next, which means you are never making a decision from scratch. You are simply following a sequence that has been built up over years of real sessions with real babies and real families.

The guides are deliberately uncluttered. No unnecessary information, no distracting design. They are built to be used in a studio, not admired on a shelf. Print them on A4 paper and keep them by your beanbag. 9 poses per page means you can see exactly where you are and where you are going at a glance.

How to Use Them

You will not use every pose in every session. That is intentional. There are 81 ideas to mix and match from, which means every gallery looks different. Parents never feel they are getting a cookie cutter service and your portfolio stays varied across your website and social media.

Start at the beginning of each section and pick from each set. Skip over poses that would produce a similar image to the one you have just taken. The variety is built in, you just need to follow the flow.

Do not worry that clients will think you are following a script. They will be far too focused on their baby to notice. And if they do notice, seeing that you have a clear plan in front of you will only make them feel more confident.

Two Guides, One for Each Kind of Baby

You never know which baby is going to arrive. A sleepyhead who barely stirs, or a wide-awake one who has clearly decided that 9 months was long enough.

The Sleeping Guide begins with a settled baby and flows through to waking moments, feeding breaks and back to sleep again. The Awake Guide begins with an alert baby and works through a natural sequence from there. Both guides include poses for sleeping and awake babies because every session shifts, but the starting point is built around that first moment when the baby arrives.

It is worth having both guides to hand at every session. You will not always know which one you need until you open the door.

What You Will Have at the End

By working through this guide you should expect to present parents with between 20 and 35 varied images at their Reveal Session. These will include the couple together with the baby, each parent individually, hands shots, detail shots and several of the baby alone. Even in a session where the baby is unsettled, the structure of the guide means you will still have enough.

Each guide is £49 and comes as a downloadable PDF. Works with natural light or flash. Print it, save it to your phone, keep it by your beanbag.
